The Tanglewood School (Tanglewood Montessori)

This school has closed, and the building it occupied no longer exists. We keep the entry because listings still show it as open.

Closed  Closed around 2017 · building demolished May 2018

The site at 15 Tanglewood Drive was sold to a developer in January 2018 and the school building was demolished that spring. Eight private houses now stand on the lot, and the address 15 Tanglewood Drive no longer exists in the city's property records. If you have information that corrects any of this, please tell us.

What happened, in dates

No closure was ever announced or reported. Four separate public record systems, run by four different agencies, together tell the story:

2013–14NYSED enrollment: 115 pre-K children — the peak on record
May 2013The Advance covers a car crashing into the school — it is plainly operating
2014–15NYSED enrollment: 103. Its last filing
to 2017Listed by the NYC DOE as a Universal Pre-K provider, 53 UPK seats
1 May 2017Tanglewood Montessori Corp. goes inactive at NY Dept. of State
14 Dec 2017Demolition application filed for the building
26 Dec 2017DOE publishes its 2018 Pre-K Directory without Tanglewood
11 Jan 2018Property sold to a developer for $2,050,000
14 May 2018Demolition signed off. The building is gone
2018–2021Eight houses built on the lot and sold

Reading those together, the school's last full year was most likely 2016–17. We give a range rather than a date because the records disagree slightly: NYSED's filings stop after 2014–15, while the DOE listing and the corporate and property records show it operating into 2017. We think the NYSED gap is a reporting artefact — in 2014–15 the school was reclassified into a category that then disappears from that file entirely — so we weight the later evidence.

A live check of the city's Child Care Connect permit lookup on 9 August 2026 returns "No match is found" for Tanglewood anywhere in New York City. There is no relocated programme under that name.

It was a preschool, not an elementary school

Third-party listings describe Tanglewood as a private elementary school, and that is wrong. The state's records classify it as a pre-K-only private school, and in its final filing as a preschool serving students with disabilities. Its own website, archived in 2001, described "a pre-school on the corner of Arthur Kill Road and Tanglewood Drive" in a newly built colonial-style building on half an acre.

This also resolves the name confusion. "The Tanglewood School," "Tanglewood Montessori School" and "The Tanglewood Montessori Corp." were the same preschool — a trading name, a marketing name and the corporate name.

Why this page exists

A school can close, its building can be demolished, houses can be built and sold on the land — and the listings carry on. As of this writing, Tanglewood is still shown as an open school by several major directories, one of them stamped with a 2025 update. Real-estate pages still cite it as a nearby private school for buyers.

Eight families now live on that lot. No child has attended school there since around 2017.

Open Staten Island alternatives

Staten Island has one Montessori school we can verify against current records: Children's Harbor Montessori School in St. George, an independent nonprofit founded in 1976 that offers free Pre-K seats. Health & safety record

Violations heard and decided at the city’s administrative tribunal. We publish these in full, including when there are none.

No cases on record. No summons to this school appears in the city’s hearing records.

For comparison: across all 18,161 DOHMH child-care cases heard at OATH, 63.1% were sustained, 21.3% ended in default and 13.1% were dismissed. Most citations concern records, repairs and paperwork — staff immunisation files, premises upkeep, sink water temperature, background-check timing — rather than incidents involving a child.

The record gives the rule cited and the result, but never the inspector’s narrative — the charge text always reads “see attached NOV”. Outcomes can change on appeal. Something wrong? Tell us.
